>>Duncan, there is one statement that you made which I missed the first time, about how people who do not need school lunches can still sign up for them. I don't believe this is true. First, at least in San Francisco, there are several pages of forms that must be completed in detail to qualify, and this information must be substantiated, and is checked for truthfulness.

What's the sanction for being untruthful? - nothing. It has been documented that those forms are often filled out by school officials to justify more money. That's why the figures on "starving" children are not regarded as accurate in any sense.

As I stated earlier, school funding is tied in some way to the numbers of students on those programs so the incentive is manifest to inflate the figures.

Christine, why don't you go down to your local food bank soon and volunteer for a few hours. Then give us your impressions.

Last time I did, about 3 months ago, I was astonished to find most of the recipients had newer and more expensive cars than my 88 Honda Civic. As a matter of fact, my car was the clunker in the parking lot for most of the day. :-)

One guy, actually had the gall to pull up in a brand new car, sticker and all, and fill his car up with free food.

Seriously, try it when you get a chance. I would like to know if San Francisco is any different.

Here, all that is required to shop at the local food bank is that you live in the school district.
