I believe there have been studies that highlight the need for children to have nourishing meals before school. They learn and retain more of what they hear on a full stomach. Fish, apparently, is not the only food for the brain.

Parents at one of our schools started a breakfast program for kids who were coming to school without breakfast. The teachers found the kids more alert, easier to teach, better grades. We have quite a few "latchkey" kids in our area, where both parents work and don't seem to have time to feed the kids in the morning. They also use the school as a babysitter, dropping them off an hour before classes start.
