Dear Evan and Laura,
You guys are confusing ex dividend with stock split. The stock splits tomorrow, probably at the close of the market. Your brokerage may or may not show the doubled shares Thursday, some of them take a few days.
Ex Dividend means the stock is paying a dividend. This is a dividend paying company as I hope you all did your research and knew. The dividend is being raised also. Now there are pros and cons to a dividend company but the fact it does give a dividend means you factor that in when deciding what the "earnings" are. The dividends are earnings too. and are being raised 4c I believe.
Perhaps the stock will drop in price a few cents to reflect the dividend being paid out. Perhaps we wouldnt notice anyway since we are in the sky territory.
Incidentally, I just read that Lucent is the second most held stock on the New York Stock Exchange. I feel so un-special. Does anyone know what the first most held is??? Is it Coca cola? General Electric? I'd say Microsoft but they are not on the NYSE.
Best wishes to all.
The next few days will prove important to Lucent: where will a strong supportive base be established? Tune in and find out!!!!
