Sunw must respond....let's hope they make it up on those high end server and storage solution products. It appears that this is the approach our management will take. It may also include a "JAVA" kicker in 1999 too.

IBM Israel Develops JavaSoftware for Internet Video,Audio Broadcasting

By Ronny Lifschitz

IBM Israel's research laboratory has
developed software written in the Java
computer language, which facilitates the
easy building of multimedia network
solution modules. The system is intended
for use by organizational data
communications networks, or on the
Internet.

The software facilitates the operation of
complex communications applications,
such as video and audio broadcasting on
the network, network telephone service,
conference calls on the network etc.

Applications of this type already exist.
However, the new Israeli development is
based on the new Java language, so that
there is no need to install new software in
order to receive all the new services.

IBM says that services can be received by
all existing operating systems through a
standard browser, and support software
does not have to be installed.

The system was developed at IBM's Haifa
audio/video research centre. IBM Israel
says the system has undergone recent
trials under Windows, Macintosh, and Unix
operating systems, and on IBM's network
computers, that operate only using Java
software.

All along has seemed to me the strongest player in the 100% Java war is IBM - more so than Sun itself. If this is in fact real and happens soon, it is BIG. This could be the move MSFT feared the most. MSFT confined to the shrinking desktop with its bloated fat ware while the world outside the home desktop - especially in the enterprise environment - goes with IBM / Sun - with multiple flavors and devices from Starfire to the Java embedded smartcard. A new day may be dawning. Perhaps the Sun also rises for real this time. Chaz
