Pat: That was a great pitch by US West. There were similar pitches in the days of ISDN. The best bait in a Mouse trap is Total cost. You keep the total cost down and you are off and running. The thousand dollar Computer is a good example.

The Airlines learnt that a long time ago. Sales of the Supersonic Concorde never got off the ground because the Public were less concerned with speed than Cost. Most of US West's ADSL customers were Corporations direct or thru a Perk package. Most Americans are not so lucky. Besides during an Economic downturn you will see Corporations also cutting back on such perks.

In brief, whilst I enjoyed reading that article, it did not sway my
earlier findings that Consumer Resistance to newer but costlier Mousetraps is rising. Current Sales of PC's and NetWorking Products
also conforms to this trend.
