George,
Re -- is Bay to Cisco what AMD is to Intel?

No. Intel has a dominant position in a relatively mature chip making industry (x86 is the standard).

Cisco doesn't have a lock on any aspect (other than the soon to be obsolete routers) of the networking industry which is rapidly evolving with new standards and new paradigms.

Thus if Bay moves faster than cisco, it could chip away at the old block.

Dear George - I wish I knew the answer to your questions <sg>. As I ve suggested in my post upon which Stockman has commented. CSCO is a force to be reckon with. While it may not ve a lock on networking, Messr Chambers, to me anyway, is as good as Messr Gates or Messr Grove. So, while Messr House is good, Chambers is not sitting still, especially in light of his experience while he was a VP at the pre-restructed Wang Lab.

Having said that, that really makes the spectacle so interesting to watch, if not our money is on the line. To me, both House and Chambers are great strategists without the bondage of ego. [disclaimer: I don't know them, but this is the impression I got.] Well, maybe House still has something to prove, but from people describe him here, he has certainly put the corporation before his own needs. I guess what I am trying to say is: David is not Jerry <vbg>

Right now, I am as shaken as you are, since I ve overweighted [way too much] in BAY. OTOH, it is hard for me to imagine I ve another SYBS on hand <VBSG>

George, you absolutely must hold BAY at least through '98. I do not mean to imply that BAY cannot stand on its own because I believe it can and as a shareholder that is what I want, but ... there is going to be consolidation in this industry especially as networking and telecom converge. I think you will be remiss not to see how it plays out. BAY is a strong company financially and neither Asia nor an economic downturn will ruin it.

Just my humble opinion.
