U.S.' WorldCom Gets Australian Telecom Carrier License

I had heard this was in the pipeline. It's not clear what the implications are. The biggest telecom Telstra is still 2/3 government owned and has foreign ownership restrictions. So the impact here is on the competitive side. The next two biggest are Optus (not publicly listed yet) and AAPT. AAPT has concentrated so far on the business market in metropolitan areas (I use them for long-distance/international at home but residential customers are a minority still for them). So this is head to head with AAPT. But maybe there could be a foreign takeover bid for a company such as AAPT?

I hold shares in both Telstra and AAPT which I bought in the IPOs last November. I sold half my Telstra holding last week so now I have equal holdings roughly in Telstra and AAPT.

Telstra was down 4c to $A3.84 yesterday. AAPT was up 2c to $A3.10. There is a second installment due in Nov for Telstra of $A1.35 per share for retail shareholders. I suspect a lot will sell up either side of that and the price will decline.
