Conservatives have made a terrible tactical blunder focusing so much on the deficit as spending gallops higher and higher. Do you mean the deficit, or the public debt? Not the same thing. We are making inroads on the deficit. Have in fact eliminated it, for this year at least. Spending? Well don't blame FDR. Life expectancy has increased enormously since his day, and it's a major problem. When Social Security was invented the life expectancy of American males was 63 years. It was designed ONLY to be paid in extraordinary circumstances, and then only for a short time. Oooops.
