Hi Holly and others, It would help to better ground our conversation of transgender, or transsexualism, in reality were we able to recall examples other than stop & robs and prison inmates. They represent a minority, the same as would be true for any other part of our population. But, how to recall that which is not brought to our attention, and why is this not so? As with so much in our lives, we depend greatly on how the popular media functions in terms of what sustains it, and the sensational seems to be the largest portion of its diet, and therefore ours. This is true across the board. For example, who is the female author who has quietly lived her very interesting, daily life with an uncommon vitality traveling about the world, gaining an intimacy with cultures, mores, country villages and international cities, and then writes her well known travel books with remarkable care and outstanding affection? This is the same woman whose sought after writing also appears in such publications as Travel And Leisure, Town And Country, National Geographic, etc. She is the same transsexual woman who, years ago, so carefully and passionately wrote a whole book about her own transition, one which still serves to inspire others at whatever stages of similar journeys of self discovery. Perhaps some of us here have read the books of Jan Morris. Male to female transsexuals are sometimes known to be just that, and sometimes not. They live and work in all areas of life. One such woman is a well know composer, musician, and founder of an avantgarde recording studio and record label, another the head of a department in a well known university. One is a physician in an inner city health care clinic in San Francisco, another in government in that same city. Another appears as a guest soloist with major symphony orchestras all over the world. Another frequently appeared on television as a member of the on site team of a well known news organization that covered the Gulf War. Thousands and thousands more live relatively more inconspicuously, as most of the people here in this forum probably do. We cannot begin to comprehend the infinity of creation, but it is ours to live in the midst of, to revel in, to love. Ultimately, it is Mystery, and it is us. What it is that we have to give each other and the world is ourselves, and every day I am led to believe that this is what God has in mind. Best, Charliss
