You are really striking a nerve with me. One could volunteer at a nursing home to provide care and comfort to the residents there, and take mileage and other expense deductions for that work. Most of the care that these people need is not medical. But to take a charitable deduction for providing the same support to one's own parents is NOT ALLOWED??? Yeah man, it sucks, but that's the way it looks to me.

You said:
what about a parent PROVIDING care for an elder, like drivng to nursing home to assist and volunteer???
she is not providing 50% of the housing cost

Not sure what you mean?? The parent is visiting her elder offspring at a home? If so the same rules apply. 50% support, with a couple exceptions for parents for their issue under the age of 23
