It would help to know how total book sales are doing in 1Q98 (in determining how AMZN's subset might be doing).

The 4 big players are:

Bertelsmann AG (almost $2B sales with Random House)
- Bantam
- Doubleday
- Dell
- Random House
- Knopf
- Ballantine
- Crown
- Vintage

Viacom (VIA)
- Simon & Schuster
- Prentice Hall
- Pocket Books
- Macmillan

News Corp (NCP)
- Harper Collins

Time Warner (TWX)
- Little, Brown

Can anyone get a fix on book-revenues for these entities this year so far? I'm curious to know if the business in 1Q98 is strong, flat or weak. I think the total industry revenue is about $20B. There is an industry publication called "Subtext" that I've not been able to find online.

Incidentally, un 1991 through 1993, total book revenue increased 11%.
In 1994 through 1996, total book revenue declined 2% (I think there was also a decline in 1997).
