SQL server works only on one platform. Oracle works on all OS. MSFT has to dominate OS market before it can think of taking over Oracle. In another words, companies like SUN Micro. would have to die first. Will that ever happen? Right now Oracle is taking lead on both UNIX and NT. Oracle is eating market share from all the other database vendors, including MSFT.

Response to Statement 3 - NOT

"Do you have any understanding of what data warehousing and data marts are? Not sure you do. Much of this development is being put on hold because tools are still being developed and the costs of development are very high. Data warehousing is an iterative development process and requires a great deal of time and effort to maintain currently."

Richard, I have an idea what data warehousing & data marts are, but would really like to learn more. So . . . as I was reading this last paragraph I was expecting (hoping) to get some clue from you as to what data warehousing & data marts are -- but you never went on to explain them; you merely talked around them. This is what's frustrating in reading your comments, Richard; you don't communicate; you don't talk in specifics, just generalities (remember "where's the beef?") -- and this is why your initial post here was viewed as so absurd.

So . . . as far as data warehousing & data marts, can anyone other than Richard provide a concise synopsis. I would greatly appreciate -- and Richard might, too.

1. I'll believe it when I see it. I have seen so much of Microsoft "hype" that is pure garbage. I remember the big demos from last summer that were totally bogus (only the Tandem demo was reasonable, but the two Microsoft demos were not).

2. The last I saw indicated that NT 5.0 was slipping out of 1998.
