Symbios has a presence in wireless communications and Set-top boxes and other high growth areas that ADPT has no presence. when it comes to SCSI there might be some overlap and some products will be pruned, but those decissions are based on dollars. Now will there be some synergies in the SCSI group yes, are there room for layoffs yes. Who will go and who will stay Symbios employees will most likely be the first to go.

If business conditions are great you just place these workers on new projects. If cash flow is hurting, then out the door they go. Will Accounting and payroll, sales, marketing all have romm to be prunned over time. This will benifet the share holders in the short run.

I have been seeing interesting notes on Adaptec and DVB lately. In Las Vegas this week (ends Thursday) at the NAB (National Association of Broadcasters)show its Satellite Express satellite-to-PC networking receivers apparently are getting attention. And there have been several announcements today about strategic partnerships with satellite communications companies.

-- DigitalXpress ("specializes in satellite-to-desktop digital video, audio and data information distribution systems for the business community") will use the ABA-1010 card;

-- DiviCom ("develops and integrates products that make digital video networking possible") will use the ABA-1030 card;

-- CyberStar (a unit of Loral Space and Communications (LOR))(it "uses existing satellites to provide high-speed transmission, applications and custom aggregation of data, audio and video content") will use Adaptec Satellite Express cards (ABA-1040);

-- EUTELSAT ("Europe's leading satellite operator, is the first in Europe to deliver DVB-based data broadcasting") uses Satellite Express;

-- the Media4-Adaptec partnership has already been announced;

Just a guess, but it looks like Adaptec will be a (the?) major supplier of receiver cards for DVB. Sounds promising for the future, at least.
