Hi Jules , seems IBM is addressing its mainframe "connections"

IBM will have a web server offering to suit all OS and language tastes as a "gateway" to its IBM/390 mainframe "data-warehouses" :

zdnet.com

On INTC/MERCED : Merced as a 64 bit RISC CPU is still on the drawing boards . INTC offered "charter member" deals for "conceptual support" of it but I have not seen IBM sign up .

IBM may be reluctant as it has , along with Motorola , a workable 64 bit RISC PowerPC chip ready to go by year end .

IBM partners with INTC on its Pentium CPU which IBM then improves for use as a NT server . IBM does not use MSFT gateway code and instead IBM writes the NT interface to its (IBM) mainframes.

The above server announcement is along those lines .
