well, because they have consistenly grown 20% + year to year. have never lost money, and dont announce flat quarters where they make 0 profit. lets see - they also have consistenly beaten bigger and at one time more dominant companies like IBM, HP and DEC. Lastly they have something Microsoft fears - Java. I know that raises the hackles of the microsoft bigots who are paid to be shortsighted and refuse to see anything that Microsoft doesnt dominate as a starry eyed plot by people who dont realize that Microsoft is the only company that knows what the world really needs.
