In that case you might ask why they no longer need the acid plant. Sounds like an inconsistency to me. I believe the same goes for the production of alumina, but I no longer have the patents handy. It's easy to check. Just look for H2SO4 consumption.

Two possible explanations:

1. They now plan to buy acid on the market as needed
2. Their acid plant is worthless anyway
