MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 3, 1998--Adaptec, Inc.
is now offering a new version of its award-winning Toast CD-R software
-- Toast DVD.
Toast DVD gives Mac users a low-cost way to create DVD-ROM and
DVD-Video discs on their desktop. Prior to this innovation, for the
Macintosh user, creation of DVD discs images required a dedicated,
expensive workstation/software combination generally available only
through high-end post-production facilities.
Toast DVD can create DVD-ROM or DVD-Video discs using a
DVD-Recorder, allowing DVD title producers to create one-offs for
development and testing. Toast DVD can also create an image of the
DVD-ROM or DVD-Video on a hard disk drive or other storage media, such
as a Syquest or Jaz drive. The image created can then be emulated or
played from the drive before actually burning a DVD-R disc, saving
time and money.
The DVD premastering upgrade is a simple drag-and-drop interface
with the DVD file formatting done automatically. Toast DVD formats
these files in the standard UDF 1.02 Bridge format, for compatibility
with standard DVD-ROM drives. The UDF format also allows the DVD discs
created with Toast DVD to be read in both Macintosh and Windows
systems. Likewise, if a developer has created DVD-Video files using a
DVD authoring and encoding system, Toast will lay out and create
DVD-Video disc images. Toast DVD also allows developers to add data
files to DVD-Video images for access by in DVD-ROM systems.
Toast DVD will be available in April on the Adaptec World Wide
Web site at www.adaptec.com. For consumers who already have Toast, the
upgrade to Toast DVD will be offered at $99. For those without the
Toast software, a full version of Toast and its new DVD capabilities
will be available on line for $198.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 6, 1998--CyberStar,
L.P., a leading provider of global broadband services (GBS), and
Adaptec, a leading provider of bandwidth management technologies,
announced today a strategic joint marketing alliance to develop and
promote distribution and customer support channels for CyberStar's
high-speed data communications service.
This relationship will enable CyberStar and Adaptec to offer the
industry's leading satellite-based broadband service into three major
areas: computer resellers, OEMs, and application developers. By
focusing joint efforts on these areas purchasers can be assured of
getting a service that is tailored to their specific needs with
superior customer service and support.
"This is another important milestone in an already successful
partnership," said Emil Regard, vice president of marketing and
business development for CyberStar. "Our goal is to make broadband
services easy to buy and install for our potential customers. By
working with Adaptec, CyberStar is able to employ a product and
service distribution model that is convenient for and familiar to our
target markets."
"This relationship is an exciting move toward delivering the
promise of real-time satellite data delivery for business and
consumer markets that, until now, primarily relied upon expensive
terrestrial lines of communication," said Lana Vaysburd, general
manager of Adaptec's Satellite Networking Group. "By working
together, CyberStar and Adaptec will combine their expertise in
satellite technology and PC bandwidth management respectively and
deliver a powerful and complete solution to important OEM, VAR,
distributor and developer channels. We are very pleased to have been
chosen by CyberStar to fulfill this role."
CyberStar, a Loral company, uses Ku-band satellites to deliver
broadband applications and multimedia content channels to businesses.
Because CyberStar uses open standards -- including IP, DVB, and MPEG
-- the service integrates seamlessly with an organization's existing
network infrastructure to deliver multiple forms of electronic
information to a variety of networked devices, including PCs, network
servers, interactive kiosks, set top boxes, and terminals.
Late last year CyberStar announced the use of Adaptec's PC
receiver adapter card (Satellite Express ABA-1040) to facilitate the
connection of a user's PC to receive CyberStar's service, including
data, audio, video and multimedia content. This gives users seamless
access to high-speed digital data streams via satellite.
CyberStar service capabilities include multicasting, high-speed
Internet access, business information services and video streaming
for a variety of applications including corporate training,
multimedia distribution, distributing software to field locations,
updating company databases, and kiosk updates. For applications such
as distributing software, companies will be able to send their
content to many locations, simultaneously, regardless of the file
size and type, whenever they want.
