Starowl...Obviously Adaptec can see potential...I have been following the Globalstar satellite communications network via Qualcom, and this system and the Iridium system will go online next year. IMHO this whole area of satellite telecommunications is going to grow very fast, starting in 1999. (Right after the year 2000 problem is resolved!)wj

All they are really doing is setting up a network with highly asymmetric send and receive capacities. Old and simple as it is, it is a very good idea.

Consider all the places in the world where there is digital satellite coverage but relatively poor cable infrastructure. Say the installed cable plant isn't really capable of handling a lot more than 56 Kbps (and possibly a good deal less) all the way to the end users. What is a cost effective way of getting these people access to all sorts of electronic goodies?

Where are such areas? Many places in the US qualify and so do many places in Europe. Fiber - or even good grade copper - to the home is a ways off. I think large parts of Asia would do well with this too.... Potentially, the market is very big.

I wonder if they are thinking of adding a SCSI controller that allows direct recording of incoming video/multimedia; wouldn't be that hard.

Cheers, Torben

Walter: I see we were working on the same project! While you were posting, I was summarizing.

And I for one appreciate the summarizing! In the future, would posters please submit a one- or two-line highlight from the press release, plus the URL we can go to for the complete text, instead of posting the complete release? In addition to the potential for errors and omissions, some of the postings are cut off prematurely anyway.

If we'd all do this (as most do), it would sure conserve bandwidth. Thanks.

Hmmm, maybe we SHOULDN'T conserve bandwidth - that might crimp sales of ADPT stuff to fix all the bottlenecks . . . .
