I finally spoke to John today. He blames the recent price crash on an institutional investor who recently acquired a 360k block of Sec 144 stock and promptly unloaded it. He insists that they are on track--slightly delayed because GTE Cellular didn't establish quotas for their sales force as soon as they wanted, but they still anticipate profitability by the end of this FY (July or August). He insists that his crunching of the numbers errs on the side of conservatism and they see $2.00 profits/share for next FY '99! At a 20x price /earnings multiple, that's an $80 stock! I'd be thrilled with 1/4 that much!

Since GTE started their quota system, they reported a 400% increase over units placed from a month ago, and they anticipate continued exponential increases in future placements. Current total units out there--about 5,000. Merchants reportedly love them.

He says the 2 challenges for now are to keep top level management leading the co to the next level--they are soliciting additional heavyweights for the board; and second, financing, both for operations and equipment (i.e., Tranz Enabler units). He wouldn't discuss specifics, but said these issues are being addressed effectively and non-dilutatively.

In summary, he urges, use the price lull as an opportunity to buy additional shares--you will be well rewarded. My conclusion--although John is certainly not the hypster that many of his critics claim, he often errs on the side of being overly bullish regarding his companies. But I embrace the thrust of his message--although I probably won't increase the size of my position, I will be holding for at least the next year to see if they are able to pull this off--if they come anywhere close to it, we will be well rewarded.
