Irthrifty, Any and all negative news (that which is not absolutely positive) is hereby banned:) I just found this on the Asiabiztech site. It looks as though sales in Japan are still hurting when compared to 1997. Although it is better than 1996, if that is any consolidation. I wonder what the national consumption tax is in terms of percentage points? If anybody can read Japanese then the Nikkei Market Access looks like a good site for Asian sales.nikkeibp.asiabiztech.com PC Sales in Second Week of March Decline Slightly April 6, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Unit sales of personal computers in the second week of March (March 9-15) registered a 0.4 percent drop compared with the previous week, according to a survey of about 2,000 volume sales stores specializing in home electric appliances. However, in terms of value, PC sales increased 2.4 percent in the week. In the two previous weeks PC unit sales had enjoyed double-digit growth. The survey is conducted by GfK Japan Ltd., an information service company. Compared with the same week a year ago (March 10-16, 1997), PC unit sales dipped 19.7 percent and declined 23.4 percent in value (See chart). The average sales price of a PC registered 226,936 yen (US$1,694) in the first week of March. It rose by 6,280 yen (US$47) to 233,216 yen (US$1,740) in the second week. However, the average price in the first week of March had dropped as much as 8,008 yen (US$60) from the preceding week, and it increased by 6,280 yen in the second week. In particular, the price hike of 8,268 yen (US$61) for notebook PCs was the biggest price increase since November 1997. Sales are not especially bad considering the last-minute rush in demand in March 1997, just before the national consumption tax hike. Data from GfK shows that using the unit-base 1996 average weekly PC sales as a base of 100, the third week of March 1997 recorded explosive sales of 241.5 and the fourth week, 271.3. The first and second week of March 1998 registered 135. GfK Japan regularly compiles POS data from about 2,600 outlets of 54 IT-related retailers across the nation that are mainly volume sellers of home electric appliances. Nikkei Market Access obtains the data from GfK Japan and reports weekly on unit-based and value-based PC sales. The data that GfK Japan releases comes from about 2,000 outlets of 41 firms. GfK Japan picked the 41 in 1996 and has been releasing such data since then. The outlets covered by GfK Japan account for about 10 percent of Japan's total domestic PC shipments, and about 25 percent of Japan's retail sales of PCs.
