Putting the shine on Apple for Digital TV?????????????????????

Jobs pushes QuickTime for TV

Jobs pushed the latest version of Apple's multimedia authoring and viewing platform, QuickTime 3, to broadcasters as a tool that would let producers create content once, but make it available for a variety of platforms.

Digital dilemma
This sort of streamlining strikes a chord with broadcasters, who see the digital age as the computer industry's excuse to get into TV. Soon, a single TV program will need to be adapted for a variety of media, including interactive TV and the Internet -- both havens for new technology introduced by the PC industry.

"The ability to reuse content on the Internet and on TV is the key to managing digital TV," said John Hollar, executive vice president of the Public Broadcasting Service during the NAB Multimedia World keynote.

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 7, 1998--

NDS Technology And Expertise Selected By NTL For UK Digital

Terrestrial Networks

NDS, the leading provider of end-to-end digital broadcasting systems, today announced that it has been awarded the world's largest digital terrestrial technology contract, worth over $40 million, by NTL for digital terrestrial TV (DTV) networks in the UK, due on-air later this year.

NDS will supply its System 3000 DTV video compression, modulating, multiplexing and transcoding solutions, as well as work closely with NTL to provide support through a five-year service contract.

The deal is the result of over a decade of pioneering research and development work by NDS and NTL in the field of digital terrestrial broadcasting using OFDM transmission technology. NDS has been selected by NTL, following NTL's win of two major contracts to construct and operate digital terrestrial TV networks for Digital 3 & 4 Ltd. and for S4C/Channel 5/SDN.
