Thanks for the cue. I am very interested in VCLasers. At present, they resemble many technologies, such as ICs and small form factor hard drives, which are inferior to established devices (ie, discrete lasers with external modulation) in their initial rendition and thus at first are relegated to niches (short distance gigabit ethernet). I do not know to what degree the vertical cavity devices can be perfected like ICs, but I would not be surprised to discover them ubiquitously five years or so hence.
