A new political star is born:

Mary Whitaker Bono easily won election to the U.S. House against a crowded field tonight in California. Mary Bono, 36, will be the youngest woman in Congress and the only single mother with school aged children to serve.

The impressive win means there will be no need for a runoff. There will be no need for a challenger in November either. Mary won about 2/3 of the vote, a far greater margin than her late husband ever achieved. The leading Dem, who had almost won that seat in a prior election, got about 29% and the Dems got a lower % of the vote than they have ever achieved in that district.

The race hit a new low when Mary's political opponents actually wrote and had published a letter signed by Sonny's 83 year old mother attacking Mary as an unfit mother who was unfit for Congress.

How do you spell B O O M E R A N G?

Pat,

The incident to which you refer may be just another example that the media can and do embellish upon fact and turn a nonevent into a media clambake.

I don't recall all of the details, but remember that someone ran a check after this story broke, and discovered that no aircraft were endangered or delayed in takeoffs or landings while Clinton had his hair cut.

The then joke of the day was that the President was ill-advised to go from having his hair cut by a person with three names to a person with only one name.
