have watched this little miny tempest from sidelines but please don't try to tell me the tech titans worship at the fountainhead.

they scream as loud as anyone for government intervention when they're toes are pinched, ie. chip dumping from asia, various anti-competitive acts by microsoft etc. how about their tirades and campaigns about software piracy (where's the unrestrained free enterprise there?). what about appeals for govt. research and development to fuel their product pipelines? how about the tax breaks and incentives they always demand when locating plant etc.

don't tell me the technology industry (whatever that is) doesn't want or need government. how about finding a balance point between too much planning and bureaucracy and the excesses of the unfettered market?

Frank,
Why would you inflict on poor Chaz such mediocre writing? Try some good old American Realism a la Dreiser. Only then, go on suggesting to others any reading. And one more thing: do choose from the higher shelves at the bookstore (it's harder, but quite more rewarding.)
Marino.

While you are ordering copies of Ayn Rand books for everyone, you might want to order a copy of Upton Sinclairs " The Jungle" for yourself. I would suggest a Hard cover.

This thorny issue has been agonized over for a long time. It will never be resolved but there will be a continous process of compromises and concensus depending on the political, economic and social climate.

In one of my past lives, I owned and operated a floating seafood restaurant. If Steven Farber "stiffed" the person waiting on them he would not be forgotten and if he decided to return he would be remembered and been told before ordering that that there would be a 15% gratuity before ordering. In Europe, the gratuity is included in the bill. In the U.S. the system allows the customer to determine the amount of the gratuity. You are not teaching anyone "the value of a good education" by not leaving a tip. The people that worked with me had dreams, aspirations, children etc. and the gratuity was an intergal part of maintaining this.

What really pisses me off is that I agree with a lot of what Steve Farber says but he comes across as an arrogant, insincitive person who is morally neutered.

Sorry frank for the diatribe, should have sent this to Steven Faber..

I'll be glad when the stock action picks up!

>>>After thinking about it for a couple of hours I have decided to finance a copy of The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged (in paperback) for you. I think you will find it quite different from Dickens and Tiny Tim. I only ask that you promise to read both.<<<

Thanks, but I read everything she ever wrote in the 60's, when she was still popular. Silly old girl, she was, IMHO.

Can I suggest Lewis Mumford to you. 'Tecnics and Civlisation', to start. Then 'The Culture of Cities'. There's a lot more meat on the bone there than with the neo-Nietzschean antics of Rand. Or try Huxley, Wells, or Whitehead, Churchill even. Those were the real 20's English language thinkers.

For that matter, if you like Rand's outlook, go to the originals she followed: Nietzsche and Wagner.

Cheers,
Chaz
