I think politicians in Canada are also enjoying the benefits of the strong stock market, balanced budgets, and good economic growth. They attribute these successes to themselves, when it is not necessarily the case. As you said, if the economic outlook was bleak, the population would "fry" them. Alan Greenspan's "irrational exuberance" comment is probably fitting. We are irrationally exuberant and that often leads to disaster. Similar to a teenager thinking nothing can go wrong in their lives, until they learn the valuable lesson that they are not invincible. Something will always happen to "snap" us back into reality.
