Chris, I believe there is some evidence of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah in the archaeological record. So yes, you are correct--you would say it is because God destroyed them, and I would say that there is probably some simple explanation which explains the archaeological evidence.

At least we are both clear that we have different belief systems.

Wrong. There is historical proof that Sodom and Gomorrah were two cities buried under a mixture of salt and ash, at precisely the time indicated, and ONLY those two cities. I've posted this once from the paleontological records Halley records in his Outline of the Bible Handbook. He has museums and historical fact coming out of the ears.
