JL -- "Vast", no. Conspiracy, ?

Had the whole Lewinsky deal been handled with more tact and less hype at the outset, I'm sure one of two things would have happened:

1. Congress would have received an open-and-shut, virtually airtight case, with all the ducks in a row and the Prez in a basket or;

2. None of this would have reached the media ringmasters, their circus would have traveled elsewhere, and the OP and OIC would be unsullied with allegation, innuendo and "spin".

As it is, any case that may be offered is so polluted as to be unsustainable, and all parties to it have been wounded. I think that the intent was to make Clinton look bad (worse?) because Starr's crew knew ab initio that the charges were not sufficient. It also looks to me as though they originally went after the Big Lewinsky because none of the Arkansas stuff would stick.

I keep thinking that the object is to divert our attention from some really important stuff that we aren't noticing. A vast left- center- and right-wing conspiracy? Given the quality and integrity of the politicians of the 90s, it seems as likely as anything else.
