Dwight, I have not changed any of my beliefs about Jesus. I have always understood that whether Jesus was a historical figure or not--and modern theologians disagree on whether he really existed, and I have not personally made up my mind on this matter--that there is a spirit of love and compassion that has come down through the ages, and this spirit is what is positive about Christianity. Jesus did not have to exist for this spirit to have been passed down, however.

Unfortunately, Christians throughout the ages have corrupted this spirit, and in many cases become bigots, hate mongers and murderers, in his name. But I am in touch with that original spirit. It sickens me to see it so perverted.

I am surprised that you do not even know that Jesus was a preacher in the smaller towns around a larger city in a place ruled by the Romans. They crucified him because he was a social activist, railing against Roman rule, knocking tables over to express his feelings, etc. Do you know that he was a Jew, and that the Christians were a small Jewish sect for hundreds of years?

I personally think much more good would come of your getting the video verson of the PBS special on Jesus, which was done with the input of very highly respected modern theologians, and takes into consideration recent archaeological discoveries, than it would ever do for me to read more of the Bible. But I am sure you will disagree.
