Don't believe everything you see on TV!

there is a definite implication that Larson has jettisoned the best developmental people from the companies he has acquired.

Network Associates lays off 10 percent of workforce
By Margaret Kane, ZDNN
April 9, 1998 1:09 PM PDT

Network Associates Inc. will lay off about 10 percent of its 1,800-employee workforce in a restructuring designed to achieve a "tighter level of integration," a spokeswoman said Thursday.

The spokeswoman, who asked not to be named, said the company is also shutting redundant offices, and will relocate many employees to its headquarters in Santa Clara, Calif. One of the offices being closed is the Herndon, Va., facility.

The layoffs, which started this week, are mostly in the general administrative, corporate and marketing areas. The company is looking to hire about 1,000 more people in consulting, sales and support, she said.

The administrative overlap is not that surprising, considering the merger mania the company has gone through lately.
What was once McAfee Associates Inc. merged with Network General Corp. to form NAI (NETA) last fall.

The new company went on to acquire Pretty Good Privacy Inc., Helix Software Co. and Magic Solutions Inc. since Dec. 1 of last year.

Paul,

I think the statement Wigglesworth attached pretty much explained
NETA goals. A 10 percent cut in the entire company's work force
sounds about right to me. Company's report mentioned it was mostly
overlapping administrative personnel that were cut.

What really knocked me out was that NETA plans to hire 1,000 more
people in certain sales, support and et cetera.

Programmers can be a cult group. I know a goody bunch of programmers
at Lucent Technology in my hometown in Naperville. They are a very
smart semi-cult group altho not always wise when it comes to business.
Very nice people and loyalistic to each other and the company. It
seems half those posting on the Yahoo-Neta board are ex-programmers
of NETG and NETA. I do not blame them but they are disgrunted
employees of the two companies. I like to hear their side of the
story because to be a successful investor you really have to know
the bad stuff first before buying a stock. Disgrunted employees are
the best source of bad information about any company. You need to
keep your head clear headed and listen to both sides.

I should also point out that NETA is NT driven. They are trying to
get away from Unix which is a wonderful product. Unfortunately, the
way Microsoft dominates the industry - NT is the way to go. It is
my guess that the programmers that were cut were mostly Unix
programmers. They are pissed that NETA didn't take the time to
retrain them from Unix to NT. I am guessing NETA is moving to fast
on the acquisition trail to retrain them. It would be easier to hire
those already trained in NT.

Regards,

Cyclops
