>>The S-A have developed some very sophisticated sequential precipitation processes (which if not done right can result in some minor explosions, I am told), but to my knowledge, they have never attempted extraction of both gold and the PGM from the same ore body.<<

Zeev,

In the majority of the time, The S-A concentrate their ore (flotation and/or gravity). From this point, if gold is present they will use potassium cyanide and/or bromocyanide to extract the solubles. Since the majority of the platinum metals are soluble they take the filtrate and selectively extract the gold, silver and platinum metals. The methods employed in this technology deals with resins and phase organic chemistry. Most of the commonly used resins were developed by Dow Chemical.

Zeev,
That "[no one has ever] attempted extraction of both gold and the PGM from the same ore body" was what I posted on the IPM thread recently--my point was that this may be the major nut that the DDs can't crack [vs. the mystical microcluster crap].
Naxos is currently avoiding the PMG morass in that Ledoux is just reporting Au [from a 'standard Pb FA with an ICP finish'] because they 'can't afford to do PMGs at this time'.
Maxam, on the other hand, is a sure bet--they have a fortune in Al ;)
