It's been a couple of million years since I studied English Literature, but weren't Elizabeth and Robert B. separated for a number of years, necessitating their lengthy correspondence? One could opine that people grow apart and misunderstandings develop during long periods of separation. More simply put, things change. In that light, they could be compared with the strangers who correspond electronically.
