Pete, you're so thoughtful to remember! The tournament was last weekend. Maybe I didn't write about it because it was not the best experience in the world. Although I guess you could consider it one of those learning about life things. Which is what you tell your children when things are really unfair and you're trying to keep them from becoming bitter and cynical before their time. THe tournaments were held in Southeast Dallas. For those of you who aren't familiar with Dallas-- this is NOT where the doctors and lawyers live. The Southlake parents sidled into the Rec Center, eyes darting, hands clutching wallets and pocketbooks. THey heaved a sigh of relief when they saw other people like themselves and sat huddled together on the bleachers. Dan and I didn't tell them that we used to live in the neighborhood and played ball here every week. We felt right at home. Ammo's team had made the quarterfinals-which was really good. They were feeling cocky until the other team walked in. Picture eight grown men strutting in like they owned the place. They were all over 6 feet tall, had hairy legs, five o'clock shadow, and looked as if they'd been working out with Arnold. Where did these guys come from???? This is a 14 and under league! Ammo had turned 15 in the middle of the season and was one of two ninth graders on our team-and is the oldest kid. Some of our boys were still only 5 feet tall. Needless to say, it was a brutal game. I believe the final score was 70-20. But Ammo scored 14 of those points. He was the only one they double teamed. When it was over, I went to find the organizer. (DOn't worry-I was really polite and nice.) I said, "Um, those men that just wiped up the floor with out little boys shave and probably have children of their own. Just how were these teams chosen?" It turns out that this team was all 9th graders who also played on their school teams, which Southlake doesn't allow. He apologized and said he had learned a lot about things this year and would try to rectify them next year-make it more equal. That this year had been an open tournament. The funny thing is last night I went to the Mavericks-Nuggets game and they paraded the winners of the tournament around the court. (The tournament had been sponsored by the Mavericks organization) The 14 and under championship team was NOT the team that beat us. Wow. That's a game I would have liked to see. Ammo really wasn't very disturbed by it. He was pretty beat up. Had taken an elbow in the mouth and his lip was all swollen and he had floor burns and a jammed finger, but these are apparently good things. (Someday maybe a man will help us women understand this mentality-that some injuries are not just ok, but even desirable) Someone from the other team had high-fived him and told him he had "game". I noticed he walked out with that athlete strut --have you noticed it, kind of a slouchy, loose, pigeon-toed walk?? He was cool. So I guess the outcome wasn't as bad for him as the experience of watching it was for us.
