Michael, the suggestion of aversion therapy by forcing your teenager to smoke an entire cigar is novel, but I am not sure how it would help the situation. Children who start smoking quickly become addicted to nicotine, so forcing more into his system would seem to make it harder, not easier, to quit. He might throw up all over both of you after that cigar, but then he would want more nicotine after he recovered.

There are absolutely no experts on children, even conservative ones, who I have ever heard advocate whipping teenagers. In fact, even the ones who say that open-handed spanking on occasion will not damage an otherwise healthy smaller child do not believe older children should ever be even spanked. And there are none who would ever say that whipping a child of any age, or using any kind of paddle or other hitting device, is anything but abusive. My own feeling on this is that if you whipped a teenager, he would defy you even more, or maybe report you for child abuse, or even run away. I am not sure how you think any of these results would solve the problem of nicotine addiction in a teenager. Did I miss something?

It is really too bad that there are broken families. But I have never seen any statistics to show that there is a direct connection with the teenage smoking rate. Do you have some? I think more teenaged girls than boys smoke, however. One thing that really has been shown to be contributory is having a parent who smokes. Did you say you smoke cigars?

P.S. Your honesty is refreshing. I already think I make sense most of the time, so I wasn't really worried about that.
