"I'm considering becoming a subscriber, however, the 28.8 speed is a big deterent. "

Too fast? I'm sorry, but what is the problem here? There's not another option for portable communications. None, unless you're spending many thousands of dollars on an autotracking satellite dish and gonna get direcPC thru it... but then you'd need a metricom modem anyway for the upstream connection.

Ok, there are some other options for portable communications, but they max out at 9600 baud and charge by the byte.

This perplexes me because others have your same comment, but it makes no sense. Metricom has every other system beat in at least one component- cheaper than a phone line and modem on a monthly bases, faster than all the other portable connections, more mobile than everything that's faster than it.

I will forward your post to the appropriate people...

<I'm considering becoming a subscriber, however, the 28.8 speed is a big deterent. When might we expect much higher speeds (how high?) in the SF Bay Area?>
Well, I think it was already answered very well, 28.8 may not be the fastest data rate anywhere, but it (practically speaking) the fastest wireless data rate, and costs MUCH less than slower methods (ARDIS / RAM, ... )

As for a higher speed in the Bay Area, for that we will all have to wait for the Autobahn network. As far as i know, we are working towards having it commercially available around 1Q or 2Q 1999.
