Not quite the same situation CR. GM and Ballard have been working together on developing a fuel cell car since 1990. We know the fuel cells work fine but GM hasn't had nearly the success with development than Daimler has. How come? What's obviously been missing is a corporate commitment to alternative vehicles. They haven't had the foresight or put the resources on it that European and Japanese auto companies have. When BLD was looking to work more closely with an auto partner GM lost out to Daimler because they weren't willing to pony up the same favourable terms as Daimler. This didn't mean their work with GM was at an end, it has continued with new orders from both GM and their Delphi sub, which was contracted by Chrysler to develop the drivetrain for a gasoline reformed hydrogen fuel cell car. Don't look to the big 3 to be leaders in technology, they rarely have been. There's a reason GM's market share is at an all time low. I wouldn't say that their buying 3 Priuses has much to do with their relationship with BLD.

The point seemed to be missed by many when GM announced it will buy more of BLD's fuel cells in a $3 million plus contract. I agree the stock behaved irrationally to a small contract that day, but the importance of that contract in my mind was that it came AFTER GM announced a major push into fuel cells on the part of it's global operations. They said they had their own fuel cell they were testing but would still work with BLD going forward and then they order more BLD fuel cells. The point is that actions speak louder than words and that GM obviously feels it still needs to be working with BLD regardless of their own development efforts.
