Of course if people had only gone with Apple computers there wouldn't be any problem! Every Apple ever built was made to handle the millennium....

Re: GPS Week Rollover

I just spoke to an engineer from Trimble Navigation. He informed me that Trimble has just completed testing their range of products, but hasn't issued a statement. Trimble views this as a "real issue". He also informed me that there should not be an issue with "recent model" Trimble handheld receivers for Bay Area sailboat racing (my hobby).

He did say that the test procedure runs six hours and includes three separate tests, per receiving unit, and that the tests must be conducted in an in-house test chamber.

He also noted, as did the US Navy, that marine operators are responsible for ensuring the efficacy of their units.

If anyone else would like to check this out, call Trimble at (800)487.4662.

Many thanks to CK for discovering this; I was not aware that a problem existed until this morning, and I've been using gps at least monthly for three years.

Allen

Debunking the false claims of C.K. Houston - second in what will be a very long series:

GPS will not "fail" on August 1999. First, you implied that the satellites "embedded systems" have to be fixed. This is a lie.

You also claim that "most" receivers will have to be "updated". This is also a lie.

GPS will not fail. The GPS navigation system will continue to function in August of 1999. The only thing that happens is that there is a week counter rollover since the week counter starts in 1980 and is modulo 1024. Nearly all units built in the last 5 years handle EOW correctly. Furthermore, in the unlikely event that an old system does not handle EOW, this will really have no effect on its ability to get an accurate location.
