I think Matsunaga has a point. I heard on the way home tonight that the income tax rate on incomes less than about US$50,000 is 3% !!! I mean, I know the cost of living is high in Japan, but still..

And most Japanese never even have to file. The taxes are paid directly by their employer, who also handles all the paperwork. I gues there aren't a lot of messy deductions and such.

I think I may be gaining a new found respect for their system. We'll see..

>>Signs of discord between the IMF and the world's second-largest economy underscore differences which came to light at the London Group of Seven (G7) nations' meeting in February and which were rekindled ahead of another G7 meeting in Washington this week.

''If people from the IMF are there as observers, then I must explain to them clearly that Japan's financial system has stabilised considerably,'' Matsunaga said, referring to Wednesday's G7 meeting in Washington.

He probably also would like to explain to them that they can kiss his ass, along with Clinton and all the rest.

I think there is really bad blood between the sharks and the jets here, goldsnow. You get the feeling from watching these guys that Ricardo Hashimoto wants to whip out his switchblade and let Riff Rubin have it right in the ribs, first chance he gets.

I remember there was a story last year when the G7 met down in Houston, I think. Clinton was apparently living out a few scenes from Giant, he got all duded up in bluejeans, a cowboy hat and boots, and I guess he wanted Hashimoto to put on a cowboy hat as well, and smile for the cameras. Probably also wanted to fire up a big, fat stogie, put his feet up on the table, and tell Hashi to have Matsunaga shine his boots.

I take it from the news accounts that Mr. Hashimoto did not respond very favorably to Bill's suggestion that he wear the hat.
