To All: I need your help

I am doing a research paper on NSCP/MSFT browser wars and there are a few things I don't understand. I am hoping someone who is vastly more knowledgeable than me about computers could answer my questions. Here goes:

1. Microsoft seems to think that browsers pose a real threat to the their OS monopoly. In fact the way they talk they believe there is potential for the browser to render the Windows OS obsolete. How can this be ? I thought that browsers still require an OS to run on top of. Therefore a browser on its own would be useless.

2. How does Java actually work ? To my understanding is a java virtual machine which runs on top of the base OS platform whatever that may be and its role is to interpret the java code for the specific machine it runs on. My question is this is there just one java virtual machine which will run with any type of machine i.e. intel, apple, unix based etc. or must each platform have its own particular java virtual machine.

3. Are Java programs really compatible across all platforms ? i have heard various accounts.

Thank you for your time. I hope to recieve only objective replies.

Mongo.
