>>> Excuse me, but I think you have your head in the sand. At the high end, SCSI is very vulnerable to Fibre Channel. <<<

Isn't that what Firewire is all about?

Thomas:

<<My personal view is that SCSI will disappear over the next 5 years to be replaced by fibre channel and/or USB at the desk top.>>

I'm not sure SCSI will go away so fast, particularly if prices can be cut commensurate with box prices. Fibre channel is rapidly making inroads, however. The SEG conf call yesterday made this point in no uncertain terms. Product transitions such as this one can make or break a company. Wall Street is betting that ADPT is broken.

Do you really think Adaptec doesn't keep up in the market and have a well-managed plan to deal with market changes? I think this is a very well-managed company and I will trust they are worrying about positioning. They may acquire a Fiber Channel company if they need that expertise. I think they have that area covered. As for the consumer future; USB is minor. Starting next year, Firewire will be how people start to connect up external peripherals. That will be the start of a major new area of profit. The bandwidth on Firewire blows away USB and it functions identically as far as Plug and Play. FireWire will replace SCSI over the next 5 years. It is hot swapable for one thing which is great. The comparison to S3 was so lame. This company has much more going on than S3; a one product company. Adaptec has its fingers in a lot of different areas. I do expect more acquisitions of little specialized companies as the market shifts. That is all for our good. I might be long gone by then anyhow since I am not planning on sticking around. This just looks like a nice trade giving it some patience to work itself out. I am in at 20 1/2 and will be happy to exit at anything over 27.
