I think your method is admirable, as I do you. It's also one that requires intelligence, open-mindedness, time and patience, qualities that are often in short supply for parents. Many parents aren't capable of extracting and transmitting complete and consistent ethical systems without help. I think religion can be a shortcut in doing this. The church can also reinforce the parents' beliefs and that's helpful. There is no question in my mind that morality can be taught without religion, but I'm not prepared to say that it has to be or even that it should be.
