jhild,
I don't think we need to know anything about the boy. I think his emotional and physical development is irrelevant to the actions of this woman.
(And although I think it is a moot point, I would argue that his very actions prove that he is NOT ready for adulthood. An affair with a married woman who already has children, who is emotionally disturbed, the conception of a child before he is capable of raising and supporting it. Just what argues in favor of his maturity besides his ability to physically carry out the act?)
If this were a homosexual adult and a 13 year old, I would have the same reaction---it has nothing to do with differences in behavioral preferences and everything to do with the necessity of protecting our children. If this woman were capable of assessing the emotional readiness of this child, then she should have been adult enough to know that what SHE was doing was wrong and illegal. The question to ask is whether she understood right and wrong. (I find it hard to believe that as a teacher she is not very cognizant of abuse law) And if she doesn't, the law is there to protect children from her. It doesn't matter how she twists or rationalizes. If she knew it was wrong, she is guilty. Period.
We all try very hard to convince ourselves that there is a good reason we violate known accepted codes...but the bottom line is, most of us know we are screwing up when we do it. And I bet she did.
But I admire your attempts not to judge her.
Remember I have two teenage boys.

Sometimes it can work. Romina Power married Al Bano when she was, I think, 15. People were horrified, but the marriage has lasted more than thirty years.
