On my drive home from work today here in Sacramento, CA, I heard over the radio that Y2K hearings were held today to get a status on the Y2K remediation effort on the State's 600 systems. A State official informed the committee that all Y2K projects are on schedule. HOWEVER .... he went on to say that they're still trying to assess the embedded chip problem, that the embedded chip problem is very serious, will not be remediated in time, and that it is the "lost stepchild" (his words) in the Y2K remediation effort.

The announcer prefaced his report by saying "Your lights may go off on Jan 1, 2000".
