That does suck, and I can well imagine where your coming from. It's a tough issue to strike a balance with in my mind because it's so individualistic in nature.

I would consider a parent who constantly spanks and yells at his/her children a form of child abuse. It wouldn't even have to be hard spankings. But if you are doing it hourly or daily it can be far more destructive than a wood shed whooping a few times in your life.

That was more of the situation with my upbringing. It didn't happen very often, but boy when I did something really bad, I knew I was going to get it. I'm fairly certain it prevented me from doing some of the more destructive things in my youth.

My personal belief is to never use my hands on my children in a hurtful way. I don't believe that the same hand which loves and comforts you should be the one to administer physical discipline. That's why on the rare occasions that I have disciplined, I use a belt. And I would never hit on the bare skin.
