Hi, the local computer superstore here have sold out the voodoo2
(both the 8meg ($229) and 12meg ($299) version) for quite awhile.
Next to the empty spaces are the diamond 8meg version of voodoo2
($249) and there are still alot of them. All these seems pretty
encouraging. But when I went to the DVD section, there are alot
of Encores sitting there and nobody is buying it. Worse still, 80% are return items! My friend told me about the glitch list of
the Encore and the list is really long and the glitches are
terrible (screen hangs). Any comments on how the Encore will
impact earnings? -AM

Hi Fred:

I have been patient for quite some time. (Fortunately, I bought it at 13.)

However, the ride has not been so nice since November.

Question for you: With National Semiconductor talking about producing an all-in-one chip that integrates CPU, video, sound and even a modem, I would expect Intel and AMD to try (and eventually accomplish) something similar.

Where does this leave Creative and its sound cards? Will they be left catering only to the high-end audiophiles?

I hope not, as I suspect that this very rapid migration to low-cost PCs (sub-$1000) is going to have a trickle down effect to the sound and modem makers.

I mean, if you can get a pretty decent PC for under $1000 (not including monitor), and that PC has decent sound, how likely are you to spend a few hundred dollars on really good sound (and go to the bother of the installation) ?

Does Creative have a role to play in these low-cost PCs, or is it cut out of that part of the market altogether?
