Mitsubishi, Tektronix Agree To Develop DTV Products
After a long warm-up, the starting gun has sounded abruptly in the race for digital video networking developers and hardware manufacturers to provide broadcasters with equipment they need to deliver high-definition programming.

A sense of urgency to get products into eager broadcasters' hands has spawned a spate of collaborations, including Mitsubishi Electric America Inc.'s [MTSBY] new alliance with Tektronix Inc. [TEK].

Under terms of the new agreement, Mitsubishi's Digital Broadcasting Business America (DBBA) division is developing 1100 series high-definition and standard-definition encoders and decoders, and HDTV multiplexers and de-multiplexers under the Tektronix-Grass Valley-Mitsubishi brand name. Tektronix will exclusively market and service the products to broadcasters and postproduction executives in the Americas.

Both companies also are continuing to develop products on their own. Tektronix announced at NAB98 its own suite of complementary HDTV products, ranging from routers to switchers to measurement products.
