Hello MB

"Another theory is the one CNBS espouses. "A stock is only split when mgt. is confident about the future." VBG Must be why Compaq split recently. They may make money one quarter this year. -g-"

Any guess as to what this will do to their confidence?

MB,

Splits also hide a variety of scameroos. Options packages and other non-economic uses of shares are often snuck into the proxy that authorizes the split.

Did corporations learn that trick from congressional law-makers or was it the other way around? :-)

Actually, I don't really see the interrelatedness of these two issues.
Shareholders almost always approve these egregious option deals, including generous re-pricings when the second shoe drops, regardless of whether a stock split is part of the deal or not. They are just not very hip to dilution of equity and FASB seems afraid to blow the whistle.

Hi Michael,
Some posts back I read your post about ISLI being your favorite Yr2k play. Today there was a very good article in our paper (Baltimore-Sunday Sun) about the Yr2k and they spoke very highly about ISLI (and Keane). Quote from CEO "The tool suppliers might sell the saws and the hammers, but they don't build the house for you. The tools are nice, but Intersolv takes end to end responsibility. If you take the tools, the next level is the carpenter, and then there's the general contractor. That's where we see ourselves."

ISLI is also diversified: It's even getting business from Europe's transition to a single currency, the so-called "euro"

Anyway, I'm curious as to why you like ISLI more so then the other Yr2k stocks.

Regards,
Sam

So, to summarize this market's view of things, it's the best of all
possible worlds and things just can't get any worse?
