Maybe you can help me.
The BX440 mother board provides for two processors.
Could it be possible to buy BX440 system now and add second
400Mhz processor at a later date when price drops?
Dell salesman could not answer this question.

L,

The problem with purchasing another company is that you inherit the 'good' with the 'bad'. With the technology changing so rapidly, some of the old doesn't work that well, and eliminating that type of support can be pretty expensive.

Were you involved with the selection of DEC for the task, or did somebody get DEC? It has been my experience that most manufacturers of hardware have a pretty good support staff. I know that when I worked for IBM, we had some great help when needed - right back to the design engineers!

It is not abnormal for a customer NOT to ba able to find the best configuration since, especially if it is a new system, they won't be familiar with the functions that the complex can perform! When I did support for new telecommunication switching systems, the operating companies had no idea how it worked. Not surprising since they hadn't been trained on it yet, and I had been in since the earliest stages of design.

Regards,

Ken

Hello Lee,

Interesting comments you made on the amount of help required for configurating hardware. Now that DEC is CPQ, how do you see DELL getting adequate support to its customers on its high end servers and other hardware to corporate customers?
