In order for NSCP to achieve thier goals, they must fragment, due to the fact that MSFT
has usurped momentum from them.

Please explain to me why it is useful for NSCP to have their own browser fragmented. The opposite is true. In fact, the idea is to make the NSCP-branded Mozilla-based browser the standard commercial browser.

Does gcc strive to produce a multibillion dollar commercial product?

Gcc is a compiler, it doesn't exactly strive to do anything. It produces pretty good code, though. People use it to do useful work, and other people do make money supporting it, and adapting it to new purposes.

You should have enjoyed Berlind's article, Reggie, you could have written parts of it. As far as standards go, I'd say Netscape's open source is a lot more in the spirit of the way everything in the internet was developed than anything Microsoft is up to. Guys go off and think something up, implement it, document the interfaces and protocols, and put up the source for others to adapt. Of course, that's all obsolete now that Microsoft has hijacked the internet, right Reggie? It's a business now, and a proprietary lock is a necessity. Bill's taking us where we want to go!

Cheers, Dan.
