A BLATANT misconception! Well, perhaps not blatant, but...

Prodigies who are not worried overmuch about expectations and do exactly what they wish to do, tend to do quite well, when judged by their own standards (ie, the things they enjoy doing). Attempts to force them into certain roles usually have terrible results.
