In the case of USR/3Com and Intel (plus others?) there are two primary threads - the main "on topic" thread, and another thread with a charter that specifies that off topic posts (stuff, chat, off topic, etc.) are permitted. Sometimes a "news only" thread which discourages discussion works well too.

I can't speak for other threads, but the two-thread setup seems to work well in the USR/3Com case. I think the Ascend-News-Only thread has worked well too.

The regular thread format is far more robust in that you can follow sub-threads easily. That is not possible on the clubhouse format, which is single-threaded.
